A Look at Honduras

Organization

Oxfam Intermón

A journey that changed the perspective of a group of collaborators of Oxfam Intermón.

“A Look at Honduras” is a series that narrates the journey of a group of Oxfam Intermón collaborators through the country. Together with the Oxfam team in Tegucigalpa, we visited their projects in different cities and towns and spoke with representatives and members of their communities, who explained to us how their work changes lives. The project has 6 episodes that address social entrepreneurship, the climate crisis, the fight against violence against women, political advocacy and environmental justice.

Women’s Leadership: The story of Clementina

Clementina runs a small soy business and lives with her two children in the Ramón Amaya Amador neighborhood of Tegucigalpa. She and 146 other women are part of the “Women’s Leadership” program, an entrepreneurship diploma that offers them training and an economic fund to move their stores forward, thus improving their lives and their families’.

Berta Cáceres: Her fight continues

Following the murder of environmental activist Berta Cáceres in 2016, Oxfam has accompanied and legally assisted her family during the judicial process that seeks to convict not only the perpetrators, but also the intellectual authors of the crime against the COPINH leader. Together with Oxfam Intermón, we visited her mother, Austra Bertha Flores, and her siblings, Nery Carrillo and Gustavo Cáceres, who told us about their fight for justice for Berta and the defense of the land.

The shellfish gatherers from Amapala

Climate change is a threat to the inhabitants of Amapala, on Isla del Tigre. Alba Hernández leads a group of women shellfish harvesters who have become promoters of measures to protect the coasts and the livelihood of the entire community.

A refuge of hope

Of the more than 4,000 femicides recorded in the previous two years, 96% went unpunished. The harsh reality that women face in Honduras is the driving force of Ana Cruz, director of the Calidad de Vida shelter that welcomes women in situations of violence and defends their rights through political advocacy, prevention and comprehensive care.

A sweet future

The Women’s Studies Center program in Honduras supports 32 communities in training, employment and business entrepreneurship. We traveled to Santa Maria de La Paz to visit a group of 11 women who have accessed the market through honey production. Thanks to this program, they have managed to generate a long-term project that ensures income and access to fair market prices.

We come back home

The trip comes to an end and the travelers return home with a backpack full of experiences, reflection and gratitude to a country that has welcomed them with open arms. There is much to do and Oxfam Intermón will continue to promote projects that make Honduras a fairer place for everyone.
